FAA Order 8130.34D — UAS Operating Limitation A-10

Appendix A · p. A-2

UA flight operations must be conducted in VMC, day and/or night.

Order notes

Reference FAA Order 8900.1, Flight Standards Information Management System (FSIMS), to verify that a safety case for night operation of a UA is necessary. The aircraft must meet the appropriate lighting requirements in .

🧭 Guidance & sample wording

Night operations — equipment for an unmanned aircraft

This limitation permits UA operations in VMC, day and/or night. Night operation is about visibility and lighting rather than the manned cockpit instrument list: show lighted position (navigation) and anticollision lighting adequate for the UA to be seen and for the crew to maintain orientation, consistent with and the program letter. Confirm the ground control station and C2 link support night operation, and that the visual observer arrangement works after dark.

When flown as an OPA (pilot aboard)

If this aircraft is operated as an OPA with a pilot aboard, it is a manned aircraft and the night instrument list applies — see the OPA night limitation (B-5) for the full + (c) equipment.
